Morning Session
Co-developing shared student-staff expectations for engagement and behavior will help set the stage for learning throughout the year. Successful restorative classroom agreements include a clear pathway for accountability and repair, as well as a process to review agreements throughout the year.  In this session, teachers, behavior and restorative justice staff, social workers, instructional coaches, and deans will explore the restorative mindset behind group agreements, learn the essential elements to make them effective, and develop a framework for facilitating the creation of a restorative agreement in their own classroom spaces.

Afternoon Session
Building relationships, routines, and resilience are an integral part of connecting with students during the first weeks of school. Restorative practices create spaces for balancing joy and celebration, as well as increasing restorative resilience when encountering pain, sadness, and frustration in routine and proactive ways. Teachers, behavior and restorative justice staff, social workers, instructional coaches, and deans will map out proactive processes that support  community-building goals for establishing a positive environment at the beginning of the school year, and explore additional practices, such as support circles and transition processes to integrate students, staff, and families into new routines.

All professional development sessions use a trauma-informed approach and teach skills and practices that you can implement immediately.

This in-person session will be held at the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) located at 1050 First Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. Parking is available near the office. Metro stops near OSSE on the Red Line are Union Station and NoMa / Gallaudet University.

DC Public School and DC Public Charter School staff are asked to register for this course through OSSE’s new learning management system (LMS) platform. Educators can follow the instructions here to activate their account. Staff will only be able to receive 2 PLU’s by registering through the system.
