PD: Truancy: Student and Family Engagement

Location: OSSE, Room 108

Target Audience:  School Staff, Teachers, Classroom Support Staff

Description: Increased absenteeism and truancy are challenges for students, families and schools. This session provides a generational approach designed to utilize restorative practices to engage students and families to explore ways all stakeholders can engage in formal and informal restorative processes to address complex student socialization needs and root causes for lack of engagement throughout the school building . Participants will leave with tools and strategies to build transformational relationships with students and families to empower youth to become collaborators in their academic and social learning processes.

Session Objectives:

• Understand the definition, impact and long term consequences of truancy on academic success..
• Analyze the root causes and factors contributing to truancy, including socio-economic, psychological, and environmental influences.
• Discover engagement strategies and techniques for fostering positive relationships with students and families to encourage regular school attendance.
• Develop best practices and effective communication for building trust and open dialogue between schools and families.
• Explore successful intervention programs and initiatives that address truancy and promote consistent attendance.
• Examine success stories of schools and communities that have effectively tackled truancy.

By the end of the workshop, participants will explore effective strategies for improving student attendance through meaningful engagement with all stakeholders in the school community. Participants will learn practical approaches to addressing truancy, understanding its root causes, and implementing supportive interventions. We will explore restorative approaches with a high focus on intentional relationship building, accountability, and expanding stakeholders.
