Fall City-Wide Workshop: Leveraging Restorative Practices for Social Emotional Learning

October 22at9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Date: October 21 and 22, 2024 (Two Day Session)

Location: Charles Sumner School, Room 101

Target Audience: Administrators, Teachers, School Staff, Behavioral Support

Description: Join us for an immersive two-day workshop where we delve into the transformative power of restorative practices to promote social-emotional learning (SEL). Restorative practices are dialogue-based processes designed to cultivate equitable, inclusive, and trusting relationships within a community. These trauma-informed practices create meaningful opportunities for students, school staff, and families to engage in social-emotional learning.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Understand Updated SEL Standards: Explore and discuss the latest D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) SEL Standards. Gain insights into their application and relevance in today’s educational landscape.
  • Assessment and Implementation: Reflect on how these standards are currently implemented in your school. Identify new opportunities and strategies to enhance their integration across your educational environment.
  • SEL and Restorative Justice Intersection: Discover the synergy between SEL and restorative justice. Learn how restorative practices can support the seamless implementation of SEL standards in classrooms and throughout the school community.
  • Practical Application of Restorative Practices: Engage in hands-on activities grounded in restorative practices that support SEL standards including:
    • Community-building circles
    • Academic circles
    • Trauma-centered micro-circles
    • Brain breaks and engagement activities
  • Strategic Use of Restorative Practices: Evaluate your understanding of when and how to effectively employ restorative practices to foster an environment conducive to SEL standards.

By participating in this workshop, you will gain practical tools and strategies to enhance your school’s approach to SEL, build stronger community connections, and support the emotional well-being of everyone in your school community.
