Community of Practice: Families and School Community – Sharing Promising Restorative Practices

During this Community of Practice, Restorative DC will collaborate with school partners to share best practices around engaging families using restorative practices. We will consider the question: How can restorative practices, which intentionally focus on family engagement, including community building and responsive circles, increase positive school culture and climate?

We recognize the role that families play in supporting their children’s social and academic success. Many school staff and administrators are discovering new approaches to effectively continue to engage with families. During this session, we want to highlight the challenges, successes and lessons learned from schools who are using restorative practices to build a school culture that is rooted in the value of family engagement.

Guiding Questions

• What strategies is your school using to stay engaged with families this school year?
• How could restorative practices and/or restorative circles support family engagement in your school this year?
• How could restorative circles, micro-circles and responsive circles support Tier II and Tier III family conversations around student behavior?

Throughout the session, practitioners will be able to share strategies for family engagement, and discuss ways that restorative practices support problem solving and community connection  with families. This will be a time of sharing, learning, and collaboration.
